At the annual meeting of the Clovis Rodeo Association held in May the Board of Directors saluted deserving members, guests and volunteers for their contributions towards the success of the 96th Annual Clovis Rodeo, and the membership elected the 2011 Board of Directors.
Clovis Rodeo Association President, Ron Dunbar thanked the members and guests of the almost 100 year old association for their hard work. "The 96th Annual Clovis Rodeo was a success because of our outstanding membership and their commitment to making what I consider one of the best rodeo's anywhere bigger and better each year," said Dunbar. "I know because of each of you our rodeo will only continue to gain momentum as we look forward to celebrating our centennial year in 2014."
The 2011 officers elected at the May board meeting are Ron Dunbar, president; Scott Saltzman, Vice President, Susan Frantzich, Secretary and Jeff Witte, Treasurer. Additional board members elected include: Lynn Armstrong, Vern Barkman, Joe Billalba, Lynn Button, Larry Cowger, Ken Elliott, Vince Genco, Greg Gillard, Joan Lassley, Chuck Rigsbee, Dan Rigsbee, Radar Ryan, Mike Spears and Mark Thompson.
The 580-member non-profit association is governed by an 18-member board of directors who is responsible for overseeing the planning of the annual Clovis Rodeo always held the last weekend of April.
The 96th Clovis Rodeo concluded its run on Sunday, April 25 with more than 30,000 visitors having attended the four-day rodeo. Fans enjoyed the return of the PBR Bull Riding Touring Pro-Division on Thursday night followed by more great bucking stock and award winning cowboys along with a concert by rising country superstar Jake Owen on Friday night; and more sanctioned PRCA tour rodeo action on Saturday and Sunday.
The Clovis Rodeo Association hosts events throughout the year that culminate with western heritage month each April where a month of activities, including the popular Ranch Rodeo, lead up to the 4-day annual PRCA rodeo always held the last weekend of April. The 97th Clovis Rodeo will be held April 21-24, 2011. Tickets will go on sale in January of 2011.

The Charro, Tomas Gracilazo will entertain rodeo fans at the 96th Annual Clovis Rodeo, April 22-25. Entertainer and barrelman Crash Cooper and bullfighters, Eric Layton and Tim O'Conner, will join Gracilazo in the arena.
Tomas Gracilazo's dedication, skill and proficiency as an accomplished horseman are combined with his expertise as a rope artist for a show that is sure to please Clovis Rodeo fans. Tomas is considered one of the finest Charos presenting La Charreia today. He has performed throughout Europe, Canada, the U.S. and Mexico. Often a featured performer in Wild West shows he has performed for Disney Productions in Paris, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show in Holland and Germany and toured with the Will Rogers Follies. Having performed for the President of the United States, heads of state, the President of Mexico and at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC it is amazing that he still finds the time to appear internationally in Charro competitions.
Crash Cooper will join Gracilazo at the 96th Clovis Rodeo as the entertaining and comical barrelman. Legend says when Crash Cooper steps into the arena, rodeo fans should be prepared for anything. Known for his athleticism and for involving rodeo cowboys in his crowd-pleasing stunts he has become a crowd favorite amongst rodeo fans of all ages. A four time winner of Canada's Entertainer of the Year, he is also the act of choice for many rodeos in the United States. Cooper hails from Seniac, Saskatchewan and majored in fine arts at Red Deer College in Alberta, Canada. The self-taught western artist finds inspiration for his drawings, graphite, pen or watercolor pieces and tongue-in-cheek cartoons in his ranching roots.
A bullfighter has one of the toughest jobs in rodeo – he must protect the cowboy so he can ride again another day. Bullfighters Eric Layton and Tim O'Conner will join Crash Cooper in the arena to keep the cowboys safe. Often some of the most entertaining men of the rodeo, the bullfighters also have one of the most dangerous jobs, that of protecting the rodeo cowboy who places his well being in their hands. The bullfighter makes sure the rider exits the arena after his ride without injury from the livestock.

The excitement continues to build as the Clovis Rodeo Association puts the final touches on the 96th Annual Clovis Rodeo scheduled to take place April 22-25. Today (Sunday, April 18) it is time for little cowboys and cowgirls to learn about rodeo during Kowboy Kids Day at the Sierra Vista Mall where they can try their hand at some rodeo competition.
Kowboy Kids Day will take place at the Sierra Vista Mall in Clovis from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. today. The event takes place in the center of the mall and can best be entered from the north side. There will be kids rodeo events and competitions for the best-dressed cowboy and cowgirl. Participants will have the opportunity to win tickets to the Clovis Rodeo.
Saturday, April 17 was spent with the 2010 candidates for Clovis Rodeo Queen putting their horsemanship skills to work in competition and joining rodeo board members, their families and invited guests at the annual Queen's Banquet. There are four ladies competing for the title of Clovis Rodeo Queen and the opportunity to represent the traditional western rodeo values that are a big part of the Clovis community's heritage. Candidates must not only show their horsemanship skills, but their scholastic skills and community involvement. The winning candidate will accept her title on Saturday, April 25 at 12:30 p.m. before the rodeo performance begins. The 2010 Miss Clovis Rodeo will go on to represent the Clovis Rodeo at events and rodeos throughout the year.
The 2010 Miss Clovis Rodeo will also receive more than $3,000 in scholarship funds towards her education and numerous gifts donated by the many generous sponsors of the competition. The 96th Annual Clovis Rodeo, April 22-25 will include a visit from seven-time PRCA World Champion All-Around Cowboy Trevor Brazile. The sport of rodeo's first $3 million dollar cowboy in career earnings, Brazile is a member of an elite group of all-around gold buckle cowboys that includes Ty Murray, Larry Mahan and Tom Ferguson. Joining Brazile in Clovis this year will be PRCA World Champion Cowboys Stran Smith in Tie-Down Roping and Luke Branquinho in Steer Wrestling.
More than 400 PRCA cowboys will come to town next week and try for a run at the 96th Clovis Rodeo and a chance at a purse of more than $300,000 in total winnings. At the 10th Annual Clovis Ranch Rodeo local cowboys and cowgirls showed-up with their best horses to use their roping, riding, branding and reining skills in competition. The winning four-person team went home with saddles that proclaimed them the Clovis Ranch Rodeo Champions for 2010 and bragging rights as three-time champions of the event.

For the first time Clovis will be a sanctioned Western States Ranch Rodeo Association (WSRRA) event – giving our hardworking cowboys and cowgirls the added recognition they deserve. WSRRA is a newly formed association representing the western United States that gives the teams of cowboys and cowgirls the opportunity to compete ata higher level of ranch-hand rodeo events amongst the best of the best. Clovis will likely see teams on Saturday who have the intention of garnering points that will allow them to move on to the next level of competition where they will try for top honors amongst full time and part time working cowboys from major ranches throughout the West. Currently WSRRA has 25 sanctioned rodeos for this season.

Local ropers Buck Cardoza (header) and Mark Schmall (heeler) won the Clovis Jackpot Roping today. Each took home a custom made saddle proclaiming them as the 2010 Champions. The Clovis Rodeo Association hosted the annual roping as a part of the community's month long Western Heritage celebration leading up to the 96th annual Clovis Rodeo April 22-25.
Mark Schmall was the champion heeler in today's competition and Buck Cardoza brought in the title of champion header with the help of his 12-year-old daughter Jessica Cardoza. The father daughter duo teamed up in several rounds of competition at the roping and racked in the winning points. Jessica helped dad secure the championship title when they teamed up in three rounds and secured the fastest cumulative time.
Next up for rodeo month will be the 10th Annual Clovis Ranch Rodeo on Saturday, April 10; where local cowboys and cowgirls will compete using skills they use every day on their working cattle ranches. Teams of four cowboys or cowgirls will compete in roping, reigning, branding, doctoring, trail competitions and more using their same horse all day. The Jackpot Roping event is the time for local cowboys and cowgirls to show off their skills as team ropers when ropers from throughout California join them. Ropers with all levels of experience compete for top prize money and custom made saddles that say Clovis Roping Champion Heeler or Header. All ropers who compete must be members of the National Team Roping Association.
