Cardoza and Schmall Win at Clovis Jackpot Roping

Local ropers Buck Cardoza (header) and Mark Schmall (heeler) won the Clovis Jackpot Roping today. Each took home a custom made saddle proclaiming them as the 2010 Champions. The Clovis Rodeo Association hosted the annual roping as a part of the community's month long Western Heritage celebration leading up to the 96th annual Clovis Rodeo April 22-25.

Mark Schmall was the champion heeler in today's competition and Buck Cardoza brought in the title of champion header with the help of his 12-year-old daughter Jessica Cardoza. The father daughter duo teamed up in several rounds of competition at the roping and racked in the winning points. Jessica helped dad secure the championship title when they teamed up in three rounds and secured the fastest cumulative time.

Next up for rodeo month will be the 10th Annual Clovis Ranch Rodeo on Saturday, April 10; where local cowboys and cowgirls will compete using skills they use every day on their working cattle ranches. Teams of four cowboys or cowgirls will compete in roping, reigning, branding, doctoring, trail competitions and more using their same horse all day. The competition will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the rodeo grounds and is free to spectators.

The Clovis Rodeo officially opens on Thursday, April 22 with the return of the PBR Bull Riding Pro-Division Tour. On Friday, April 23 rodeo action will begin with some of the best cowboys and bucking stock in professional rodeo followed by a concert for the fans with rising country superstar Jake Owen. Two days of rodeo action will continue through the weekend, along with the popular Clovis Rodeo parade on Saturday, April 25. Clovis Jackpot Roping

The Clovis Rodeo Association will begin their celebration of the community's western heritage on Saturday, April 3 with the annual Jackpot Roping event. The event opens a month of activities leading towards the 96th Annual Clovis Rodeo to be held April 22-25.

The Jackpot Roping event is the time for local cowboys and cowgirls to show off their skills as team ropers when ropers from throughout California join them. Rodeo fans will see some of the best cowboys and cowgirls compete in one of the most exciting timed event competitions in rodeo. The event is free of charge to the public.

Ropers with all levels of experience compete for top prize money and custom made saddles that say Clovis Roping Champion Heeler or Header. All ropers who compete must be members of the National Team Roping Association.

The action will begin in the rodeo arena at 8:00 a.m. and conclude in the early afternoon. There is no charge to fans that want to come out and watch the action. Parking at the Clovis Rodeo grounds is also free.
